App-based loans are now everywhere in Ghana — and so are predatory, unlicensed ones that harvest your contacts and shame you publicly if you are late. Knowing how to tell a licensed lender from a loan shark is the most important step before you install anything. Here is how to stay safe.
Use Bank of Ghana-licensed lenders
Since the Digital Credit Services Providers Directive took effect on 1 November 2025, legitimate digital lenders must be licensed by the Bank of Ghana, keep a physical office for complaints, and disclose all fees, APRs and repayment dates before you sign. Established, licensed options include Fido and the telco loans Qwikloan (MTN) and Telecel Flex. Verify any lender against the official BoG registry.
Red flags of predatory apps
Illegal apps are usually distributed as APK files via social media rather than the official app store. On install they demand access to your contacts, photos, location and Ghana Card. They charge high, undisclosed daily interest, and if you default they harvest your contact list and post your photo and ID on social media, falsely labelling you a fraudster — even messaging people who never borrowed. The Bank of Ghana has blacklisted 97 such apps and ordered banks to block their transactions.
How to protect yourself
Only install lending apps from the official store, refuse apps that demand your full contacts or gallery, and read the fee and APR disclosure before accepting. Never pay an upfront fee to "release" a loan. If an app harasses you, the Cyber Security Authority runs a 24-hour line — dial 292 or WhatsApp 0501603111 — and using unlicensed apps breaches the Data Protection Act.
Key update for 2026
Since November 2025, all digital lenders in Ghana must be licensed by the Bank of Ghana and disclose every fee and the APR before you accept. If an app hides costs or skips disclosure, treat it as a warning sign.
Safer borrowing
Check your standing first with your credit score, then compare licensed options like Fido, MTN Qwikloan and quick credit. For bank loans see personal loans in Ghana and our banks guide.
Tip: verify any lender against the official Bank of Ghana registry before borrowing.
