Ghanaian cards and foreign cards live in two different price worlds

An interbank withdrawal on a local card runs through gh-link, the national switch operated by GhIPSS, and the off-us cash withdrawal fee there is GHS 6.00. A foreign card at the same machine is charged an ATM Access Fee that ranges from ₵15 to ₵190 per transaction depending on which bank owns it.

That range is the single most useful fact on this page. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive machine for a visitor is more than twelvefold, for an identical withdrawal, in the same city, on the same day.

Societe Generale, GCB Bank, FBN Bank, Stanbic Bank, First Atlantic, Prudential, UMB and NIB are among those charging at the higher end for foreign cards.

For a visitor, choosing the bank matters more than choosing the amount

Since the access fee is charged per transaction rather than as a percentage, the cost of a withdrawal is set the moment you pick the machine. A ₵190 fee on a small withdrawal can exceed a tenth of the cash you receive.

Two habits cut this down. Withdraw the largest amount your card and the machine allow, so one fee covers the whole trip rather than each visit. And try the machine before you need it urgently — the fee appears on screen, and you can cancel and walk to another bank without paying anything.

Decline the conversion the machine offers

Many ATMs in Ghana ask whether you accept conversion into your card's currency. If you accept, the machine converts at a rate it sets itself and adds a percentage on top. If you decline, the conversion is done at the rate of the network on your card — Visa or Mastercard — which is normally better.

The correct answer is to decline and be billed in cedis. The wording makes acceptance look like the helpful option; it is the expensive one.

If the machine keeps your card or debits without dispensing

Note the time, the location and the terminal number, and keep the slip. Take the complaint to the bank that issued your card rather than the bank that owns the machine — only your issuer can raise the dispute across the network and reverse the amount.

Where cash is debited but not paid out, the settlement between the acquiring bank and yours usually detects the mismatch within a few working days. Report it the same day in any case, so that you hold a date and a reference number.
